Legend
Kirill Serebrennikov
Guest performance
Legend immerses us in the world of Sergei Parajanov, a filmmaker revered by cineastes but little known in the West. His works are marked by wide-ranging diversity and surreal fantasy. But Legend is no conventional biopic. In Serebrennikov’s lyrical and witty vision, Parajanov becomes the allegorical figure of an artist, a poet, a wanderer, a fighter, a rebel. The result is a kaleidoscopic life of passion, eccentricity, beauty, and persecution. Through ten legends, an endless metaverse of cultures unfolds in which every individual is celebrated in their singularity.
Born in Tbilisi in 1924, Parajanov grew up in the Soviet Union, and as an avant-garde filmmaker, he used his life and art to defy its bureaucratic control and repression. His defiance came at a cost, with imprisonment, hard labour, and filmmaking bans. ‘A sumptuous and fantastical spectacle that dazzles with its breathtaking imagery.’ [DIE WELT]
