Ewelina Marciniak
Ewelina Marciniak, born in Poland in 1984, studied European Studies and Theater Studies at Jagiellonian University and directing at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Kraków. Since 2008, she has directed productions at Poland’s leading theaters and has received numerous awards for her work, including the prestigious Polish cultural award Paszport Polityki in 2016 in the theater category for her epic stage visions and for her exploration of female perspectives in the male-dominated world of theater.
In her productions, she seeks new narrative forms for political and historical themes in conjunction with music and choreography. In January 2018, Marciniak directed William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the first time in Germany at the Theater Freiburg. This was followed in the 2019/20 season by Szczepan Twardoch’s The Boxer at the Thalia Theater Hamburg, for which she was awarded the DER FAUST Theater Prize in 2020. In 2022, she made her debut at the Salzburg Festival with her production of Iphigenia.
Most recently, she staged The Tove Project, based on Tove Ditlevsen’s Copenhagen Trilogy, and The Great Gatsby, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald, at Schauspiel Frankfurt, My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante at the Thalia Theater Hamburg; and My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh at the Schauspielhaus Graz. At the Residenztheater München (Cuvilliés Theater), she also directed Salome, based on Oscar Wilde.
From 2021 to 2025, she directed Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bühnen Bern, where she staged the complete cycle. In early 2026, she directed the opera Dialogues des Carmélites at the Staatsoper Stuttgart. With Orlando, she makes her debut at the Komische Oper Berlin.
