Moor Mother
Camae Ayewa (Moor Mother) is an internationally touring musician, poet, visual artist, and professor of composition at the USC Thornton School of Music. Her work spans numerous genres, from electronic music to free jazz to classical music. She is also a member of the Philadelphia-based artistic collective Black Quantum Futurism, which explores the concepts and methods of Afrofuturism.
In 2016, Moor Mother released her debut album Fetish Bones on Don Giovanni Records and has released new works regularly ever since. The album Irreversible Entanglements, which she recorded with the band of the same name and released in 2017, was selected by the music magazine Stereogum as one of the 20 best jazz albums of the 2010s. The album Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes, which she released in 2019 and was performed for the first time in an orchestral arrangement by Ian Anderson (Wooden Elephant) in 2022, also received significant attention. Other notable collaborations have brought Moor Mother together with DJ Haram, bassist Luke Stewart, rapper Billy Woods, and the post-metal band Sumac, among others.
As a soundscape and visual artist, Moor Mother’s work has been exhibited at venues including the Baltic Biennale, the Samek Art Museum, Vox Populi, the Pearlman Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Chicago, the ICA in Philadelphia, Bergen Kunsthall, the Hirshhorn Museum, and The Kitchen in New York. She has been commissioned as a durational performance artist by the Moogfest Festival, Vox Populi Gallery, and the Icebox Gallery. Her collective, Black Quantum Futurism, has been featured in exhibitions at the Schomburg Center, the Rebuild Foundation, the Temple Contemporary Gallery at the Tyler School of Art, and the Serpentine Gallery. She has also led numerous workshops and served as a mentor at New York University and the Art Institute of Chicago.
