Evgeny Kulagin

Evgeny Kulagin was born in South Ural, Russia and graduated from the Academy of Arts and Culture in Chelyabinsk. In 2002, together with Ivan Estegneev, they founded the contemporary dance company »Dialogue Dance« in Kostroma (Russia), which soon after became an important center of contemporary dance in Russia. The company was awarded three National Theater Awards »Golden Mask« for its performances. Kulagin and his team collaborated with major companies and choreographers from Russia, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria and South Africa.

Since 2014 Evgeny has been working as resident director and choreographer at Moscow’s Gogol Center, founded by Kirill Serebrennikov. There he staged the productions Shakespeare (2017), Two Rooms (2018), Barocco (2018).
Evgeny has also co-authored drama and opera productions with Kirill Serebrennikov.
Together in opera they produced Cosi fan tutte (Zurich Opera House, 2018), Nabucco (Hamburg State Opera, 2019), Parsifal (Vienna State Opera, 2021) and Die Nase (Bavarian State Opera, 2021) and Freischütz (Dutch National Opera, 2022), Cosi fan tutte (Komische Oper Berlin, 2023), Lohengrin (Opera National de Paris, 2023), Le nozze di Figaro (Komische Oper Berlin, 2024), Don Carlo (Vienna State Opera, 2024), Leben mit einem Idioten (Zurich Opera House, 2024).
Evgeny Kulagin has taught stage movement and dance at the Moscow Film School 2015-2022. He is the founder and CEO of the physical theater laboratory »DialogLab« in Moscow.
Since 2022 he has worked in Thalia Theater (Hamburg, Germany) as choreographer and director in residence and made following productions: er schwarze Mönch, Der Wij, Barocco, Legende and Geschlossene Gesellschaft.
In collaboration with a new company »Kirill & Friends« created a performance Apocalypse Tomorrow, which premiered at the festival Lessingtage 2023 in Hamburg.
