Tempelhof Airport

After dissolving the boundary between stage and audience for Luigi Nono’s Intolleranza 1960 in September 2022, we’re kicking off the new season by abandoning the music box altogether and moving into the enormous Hangar 1 of the former Tempelhof Airport. Here, by using unfamiliar ways of seeing and telling, we want to show how exciting large-scale music theatre of the twentieth century can be.

With Hans Werner Henze’s revolutionary piece The Raft of the Medusa, we’re exploring with over 250 participants in just under 80 minutes one of the great social issues of our time: How can we distribute what’s there in the fairest way? What are the boundaries that should never be crossed? How does a person become a wolf to others? We pose these questions in a space that, through its sheer scale, symbolizes not only a state’s delusions of grandeur, but also the immense human solidarity shown during the Berlin Airlift. Today it’s one of the places that highlights Berlin’s uniqueness like hardly any other: the former airport at Tempelhof.

Your way to us at Hangar 1

Arrival by public transport

The Komische Oper Berlin in Tempelhof Airport / Hangar 1 can be reached by underground via the stop Platz der Luftbrücke. On foot along Columbidamm and via Bunkerstraße you will reach the entrance to Hangar 1 after approx. 12min. The stop does not have a lift. The nearest underground station with a lift is Südstern. From here you can walk to Hangar 1 in about 20min. For news on lift or escalator malfunctions, click here.

The nearest bus stop is Golßener Straße.

Arrival by car

Parking spaces are available in front of the main building of Tempelhof Airport at Platz der Luftbrücke and on Columbiadamm and the surrounding area. Parking spaces for people with disabilities can be found via the Werner-Loebemann-Weg entrance.
