It’s now hard to imagine a season opener at the Komische Oper Berlin without a premiere at the former Tempelhof Airport. Just recently, the final performances of Aribert Reimann’s Lear, directed by Barrie Kosky, took place in Hangar 4 at Tempelhof Airport and thrilled the audience.

For the upcoming season opener, the Komische Oper Berlin is presenting yet another spectacular highlight at this extraordinary venue: The 2027/28 season begins with a new work by Florentina Holzinger on the theme of war.

The Austrian artist Florentina Holzinger has successfully performed at a wide variety of venues—from the Austrian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale to the Volksbühne in Berlin—as a performer, director, and choreographer, creating impressive works. Recurring themes in her work include female self-empowerment, religious and mythological symbolism, and experiences of physical limits. Following her sensational first opera performance, SANCTA (featuring the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin at the Volksbühne), an exploration of the rituals and structures of the Catholic Church, Florentina Holzinger will focus on war and its ideological driving forces in 2027 at Hangar 4, featuring both new and historical compositions.
