Philipp Stölzl
Director and stage designer Philipp Stölzl currently divides his professional life between theater, musical theater, and cinema. The son of historian and politician Christoph Stölzl began his career at the Munich Kammerspiele as an assistant to Jürgen Rose, Ezio Toffolutti, Volker Pfüller, and others. He then worked as a stage designer with Armin Petras, and later Johanna Schall at the Deutsches Theater Berlin became his second permanent working partner.
In his late 20s, he got into directing through filmmakers Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher and made music videos for Rammstein, Marius Müller-Westernhagen, Pavarotti, Madonna, Mick Jagger, and others. In his mid-30s, he shot his first feature film, the tragicomedy Baby. This was followed by films such as Nordwand, Goethe, Der Medicus, Ich war noch niemals in New York, and Die Schachnovelle. In 2005, he was responsible for directing and set design for a production of Der Freischütz in Meiningen, which became a surprise success. Since then, he has directed at the Salzburg Festival (Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci), the Ruhrtriennale, Theater Basel, the Stuttgart State Opera (Die Fledermaus), the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Rienzi, Parsifal), and the Bregenz Festival (Rigoletto, Der Freischütz).
His most recent highlights include an invitation to the 2023 Theatertreffen of the Berliner Festspiele with his Residenztheater production Das Vermächtnis, the opening of the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden with Elektra with the Berlin Philharmonic, and the acclaimed Liliom at the Burgtheater in Vienna.
