Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin

The DSO has been highlighted by the Süddeutsche Zeitung as an »orchestral think tank« among the capital’s ensembles. It is distinguished by the rich dramaturgy of its concert programmes, its commitment to contemporary music and repertoire discoveries, as well as its courage to explore unusual formats for communicating music. The DSO has provided innovative impetus with its moderated Casual Concerts, extraordinary music films, its feminist music policy initiative under the motto »No concert without a female composer!« and the ›Symphonic Mob‹, which has been bringing together amateur and professional musicians since 2014 and is now being implemented throughout Europe. The DSO was founded in 1946 as the RIAS Symphony Orchestra and renamed the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin in 1956. It has had its current name since 1993. Ferenc Fricsay, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Chailly, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Kent Nagano, Ingo Metzmacher, Tugan Sokhiev and Robin Ticciati were the principal conductors of the first seven decades. From autumn 2026, Kazuki Yamada from Japan will be the ninth principal conductor at the helm of the DSO. Thanks to numerous guest performances, the orchestra is in high demand both nationally and internationally as a cultural ambassador for Berlin and Germany, and is also present worldwide with its award-winning CD recordings. The DSO is an ensemble of Rundfunk Orchester und Chöre gGmbH Berlin (ROC).
