Sebastian Alphons
Sebastian Alphons is head of the lighting department at Graz Opera House. In addition to his many years of work at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, he has been working as a lighting designer at various theatres in Germany and abroad since 1988. He was also a master student of Domenico Maggiotti. He works closely with the artist and director Achim Freyer, with whom he has created the lighting for Der Ring des Nibelungen and other productions at the National Theatre in Mannheim, the Landestheater Linz, the Hamburg State Opera, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and other theatres. Together with director Claus Guth, he created The Turn of the Screw, one of the most successful productions at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin. He has also worked on productions with Jürgen Flimm and Ingo Kerkhof, as well as at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg and the Teatro alla Scala di Milano. In 2022, he designed the lighting for Die Sache Makropulos, directed by Claus Guth, at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin and for Lohengrin at the Salzburg Easter Festival. In 2023, he worked with Evgeny Titov on L'incoronazione di Poppea at the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg. At the Salzburg Festival, he designed the lighting for the opera Falstaff. New productions will take Sebastian Alphons to the Komische Oper Berlin in 2025 and back to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin in 2026.
