»1927« created its first musical theatre production at the Komische Oper Berlin in collaboration with Barrie Kosky. Since its premiere in 2012, Mozart’s Magic Flute has enthralled audiences and critics right across the world. In 2017, the British theatre group returned to Behrenstrasse for the double feature Petruschka/L’Enfant et les Sortilèges.
The collective was founded in 2005 by the animation artist and illustrator Paul Barritt and the author and performer Esme Appleton, who were later joined by the composer and pianist Lillian Henley. For more than a decade, »1927« has been experimenting with ways of combining theatre, live performance, live music and animation.
»1927« cut its teeth on the London cabaret scene. Its first show Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea was premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2007, and received multiple awards. Since then, »1927« has been touring internationally.
In 2010, with The Animals and Children took to the Streets, the theatre collective presented their second production, this time at the Sydney Opera House. The piece won the »OFFIE Award for Best Entertainment«, and was performed over 400 times at 80 venues, including three seasons at the National Theatre London.
Golem, the third production by »1927«, was made as a co-production with the Salzburger Festspiele, the Théâtre de la Ville Paris, and the Young Vic Theatre in London. In the same year, the group presented Paul Barritt’s short film White Morning at the Sundance Film Festival and the London Short Film Festival.
»1927« is based in London, and work closely with HOME Manchester, the Young Vic Theatre and Resident Artists at Stratford Circus. Future plans include an international tour of Golem, and work on a number of new projects, which are slated to premiere in 2019 and 2021.
