Christiane Oertel began her stage career as lyrical mezzo-soprano at the Erfurt opera house. Harry Kupfer brought her to the Komische Oper Berlin to play Cherubino, and she has been a permanent ensemble member here since 1988. Here she has sung roles including Dorabella, the title role in »La Cenerentola«, the Composer in »Ariadne on Naxos«, and also such roles as Olga and Polina.
On the international stage she has had guest contracts as Cherubino with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and the Hamburgische Staatsoper, in the course of which she has worked with conductors such as Jeffrey Tate and Bernard Haitink. At the Salzburg Festival she has performed as Idamante and Siebel in »Faust«. In 2004 Christiane Oertel for the first time sang Bianca in »A Florentine Tragedy« at La Scala in Milan, and in 2005 debuted as the Third Maid in »Elektra«. She followed this in 2007 with the role of Clarice in »The Love for Three Oranges« at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. Under the musical leadership of Kurt Masur, she arranged CD recordings and concerts, including at the BBC Proms in London at the Aix-en-Provence Festival.
Further artistic high points were concerts with the Leipzig Thomanerchor. In 2003 the Berlin Senate awarded her the title of »Kammersängerin«. At the Komische Oper Berlin, Christiane Oertel has sung in such roles as Bianca in »A Florentine Tragedy«, Clarice in »The Love for Three Oranges«, Maddalena in »Rigoletto«, Ruggiero in »Alcina«, Mrs Herring in »Albert Herring«, Annina in »La Traviata«, and Leocadia Begbic in »The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny«.
