Richard Strauss

Der Rosenkavalier

Comedy for music in three acts [1911]
German
4h 15m incl. 2 intermissions
Ainārs Rubiķis, the new general music director of the Komische Oper Berlin, conducts Strauss’ masterpiece on love and transience. Time marches inexorably onwards – not past us, but through us. Love is suddenly no longer young but inappropriate. Outrageous presumptions, protective ruses and lonely battles leave their scars on a youthful, loving couple, a mature field marshal and a crude baron.
»This evening is sensational. It’s as if the entire tired city is suddenly dancing the waltz; as if the scales have fallen from its and our eyes to see what we have always known but never dared believe in.« [Der Tagesspiegel]
Libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal [1911]
