Swan songs! – The Japanese violin virtuoso Midori, who has been celebrated around the world for over 30 years and who made her stage début at Avery Fisher Hall in New York at the tender age of 11, presents Schumann’s only violin concerto, which was first performed only after his death. Hermann Bäumer, general music director of the Staatstheater Mainz and a widely celebrated conductor, contrasts Schumann’s highly romantic piece with Jean Sibelius’ three-movement Symphony No. 5, a very personal engagement with the currents of Modernity and tinged with impressions of nature from Silbelius’ native Finland.
