Gig Theatre »Spec­ta­cles«

Director, singer and rising star of the Belgian performing arts, Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe—working with music producer and curator Laurens Mariën as well as dancer Hanako Hayakawa—experiments with new love rituals and dreams up a world in which people gather around gaudy bonfires and soak up the sparkling power of the spectacle. Theatre and music become a time machine. Meirhaeghe himself plays the jester in charge, an embodiment of irrational, passionate and critical impudence. Bound neither by norms nor values, he travels forward into the past and backward into the future, encountering love in constantly new guises. With its mix of operatic dada-blues-punk-pop, music and dance, hieroglyphics and holograms, high voices and deep bass, Spectacles kicks off the new Gig Theatre series, a format combining music gig and theatrical performance, calling for new kinds of grand spectacle and sublime experience—exactly what Schall&Rausch is all about!

Spectacles wants to contrast ancient civilisations with new ones and shake the foundations of our current culture. In this way, we hope to restore the bond with nature and our loved ones in the future, with humour, spirit and dangerous intimacy. The ritual form of this performative concert is important to grasp and/or sublimate the meaning of a changing concept such as ‘love’.
