»In paradise!« says Adrian Strooper when asked where he was born. Indeed, this charming tenor grew up a far cry from the centres of European high culture, at a nursery in Cairns in northern Australia – and a nursery for palm trees at that! He was only a hop, skip and a jump away from the ocean and the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef. A young Adrian would catch yabbies in the nearby stream while his sisters rode the family horses.

The thing that ultimately expelled him from paradise was his own talent. At just six years of age he began learning the piano at his school – which had a top class school orchestra – followed by the violin, which he quickly swapped for a viola – his instrument! But he was also drawn to the limelight. »As soon as I set foot on the stage, I felt totally at home!« While he was still studying at the Brisbane Conservatorium, and then in Canberra, his desire to sing grew stronger, until he eventually added a degree in singing to his instrumental degree, and was employed straight out of the Conservatorium by the biggest opera house on the continent – the Sydney Opera House. »But things were moving too quickly – singing on too big of a stage too quickly is no good.« So Adrian participated in the four biggest singing competitions in the country – winning three of them – and received the chance to train his voice in New York – among other locations, at the Metropolitan Opera – and in Rome. In the course of his education, this artistic globetrotter ended up in Germany at the opera studio in Cologne, and from there, he headed towards the capital.

His main role model was and remains his father, a wise man who has always stayed curious, no matter his age. In the 1950s, he emigrated from the Netherlands to try his luck on the other side of the world. Adrian went in the opposite direction, and found his second home on the old continent, or rather: in Neukölln. That’s where the passionate handyman lives with his small family in a apartment that he largely built himself, overlooking their peaceful courtyard. Together with his wife and their two Berlin-born children, he enjoys life in this vibrant, diverse neighbourhood, but his favourite spot is at the big table in the courtyard, where people eat, drink and chat together. And even though there might not be any palm trees here – he still considers it his little piece of paradise …
