The new General Music Director Ainārs Rubiķis makes his concert début at the Komische Oper Berlin with a bang – and that quite literally! Under his baton, Martin Grubinger, possibly the most high-profile drummer of his generation, uses the earthy materials of his drum – wood, hide and metal – to extract fascinatingly diverse, primeval and powerful sounds. He does so while performing what is perhaps the most sophisticated orchestral crescendo in the concert literature – Maurice Ravel’s Boléro – as well as Gustav Holst’s grandiose homage to our solar system. Cosmically good!
