Songs and Chansons by Kurt Weill

with Katharine Mehrling

Kurt Weill is known in Germany primarily for the works he created with Bertold Brecht. His oeuvre, however, comprises much more than just The Threepenny Opera and The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. And the musicals he wrote for Broadway – such as Knickerbocker Holiday, Lady in the Dark, One Touch of Venus, Love Life and the »American Opera« Street Scene – are no less revolutionary than the German works that preceded them. The Jewish composer was born in Dessau, came of age in the wild Berlin of the 1920s and was forced into exile by the Nazis. Based in the German musical tradition, Weill decisively influenced the then newly forming genre of the musical.
