Astor Piazzolla

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Concert performance
Tango with Shakespeare! Narrated by the theater and film legend Katharina Thalbach and conducted by the tango specialist Per Arne Glorvigen, Astor Piazzolla’s music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be brought back to life in concert! As it turns out, Shakespeare’s comedy inspired not only Henry Purcell, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and Benjamin Britten, but also the master of tango himself. Piazzolla created the composition in 1986 as incidental music for a production at the Comédie-Francaise in Paris. Now the Komische Oper Berlin will bring it back to the big stage. Individual pieces range in style from tango to French chanson, to a virtuosic duo for two bandoneons, giving Shakespeare’s scintillating comedy a special – South American – flair. Alongside narrator Katharina Thalbach, two pairs of dancers, and vocal soloist Dániel Foki, will ignite the British-Argentine tango fire!
