Marburg-born conductor Dirk Kaftan has been General Music Director of the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn and Bonn Opera since 2017. Here he has conducted Richard Strauss‘ Der Rosenkavalier and Elektra, Beethoven's Fidelio, Wagner's Lohengrin and Die Meistersänger von Nürnberg, Prokofiev's Die Liebe zu den drei Orangen and several productions in the award-winning FOKUS’33 series, including Arnold Schoenberg's Moses and Aron, Franz Schreker's Der singende Teufel and Kurt Weill's Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny.

Dirk Kaftan received awards for his work in Bonn, including the OPUS Klassik for the CD recording of Ludwig van Beethoven's Egmont in 2020 and was awarded the European Culture Prize together with the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn in 2021.

At the Komische Oper Berlin, he will direct the new production of the musical comedy Pferd frisst Hut (staged by Herbert Fritsch) with music by Herbert Grönemeyer in the 2024/25 season.
