The Berlin Staatsoper, the Komische Oper Berlin, and the Institute for Dramatic Interpretation of Music and Theater (ISIM) based in Berlin are working together in the context of the university degree program »Musical Theater Education« at Mozarteum University in Salzburg. The interdisciplinary program has existed since Fall 2014. Select modules in the program take place at opera houses in Berlin.
The degree program aims to train pedagogically and artistically competent cultural mediators for operas, operettas and musicals in various cultural, educational, and social institutions and for various target groups. The necessary skills in pedagogy, the social sciences, and psychology are to be taught under special observance of the methods of Dramatic Interpretation. The program directors from Berlin are Musical Theater Educator Anne-Kathrin Ostrop (Komische Oper Berlin) and Rainer O. Brinkmann (Berlin Staatsoper).
Musical theater education is a new professional field, principally located at opera houses, which has not yet been defined through degree programs or fixed curricula. Many people currently working in the field have not been specifically trained for it and often lack a systematic approach to educational work. The two year, part-time education program »Musical Theater Mediation« aims to produce qualified practitioners for this diverse field. Completion of the program confers certification as an academic professional. Further Information
