In Vogtland, where Peter Renz was born and raised, people sing a lot, at every festive occasion. So singing was basically in his genes. So it only seemed logical that he moved out of home at a tender age to become a member of the Dresdner Kreuzchor. »However my external circumstances were not so easy«, he recalls. »I didn’t particularly like boarding school life. It was a real military operation. But the rehearsals, and above all the concerts – they were of course a dream!« His time in the Kreuzchor came to an end when his voice broke. But he didn’t give up on singing, quite the contrary. At the Solistentreffen, the major youth music competition in the GDR, he won first prize multiple times, and as a 16 year old, appeared on the television show Herzklopfen kostenlos. After graduating from high school, he studied singing in Dresden. In the course on musicals and chanson, he met Fritz Steiner, then Artistic Director of the Dresdener Staatsoperette, who offered him a position at the institution while he was still completing the third year of his studies. And that despite the fact the Peter Renz wasn’t even particularly interested back then in performing in operettas.
 
After five years, he switched to the Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam, where he mainly sang operas, rather than operettas. From Potsdam he went to Magdeburg, this time as a lyrical tenor, where he sang a lot of Mozart and no operettas at all. When his then wife, also a singer, travelled to Berlin to audition at the Metropol Theater, Peter Renz was invited to audition as well – and was hired right there on the spot. In the following 11 years – until the closure of the theatre in 1997 – the high art of light music – operettas – formed the core of his work. You could almost say that Peter Renz’s career was a continual back and forth between these two poles, until finally at the Komische Oper Berlin, he found the house in which he could freely move between opera, operettas and musicals – which he does to this day.
 
His greatest dream is to have more time to go to the theatre every now and then as an audience member. Otherwise, he likes to devote his free time to working in the garden. »I think that the older you get, the more you develop a connection to nature«, says the tenor contemplatively, only to add with a laugh: »but maybe that’s just my Vogtland genes again!«
