Koen Schoots, a renowned specialist in musicals, is conducting Anatevka at the Komische Oper Berlin. Previously at the Komische Oper he conducted The White Horse Inn, Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, and in 2008, received the People’s Choice Award for the best Berlin theatre production for Kiss me, Kate.
Born in the Netherlands, in the ’90s he worked on musicals such as Cats in Hamburg and Jekyll & Hyde in Cologne. From 2003 to 2005, he was a conductor at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf/Duisburg, and had guest conductor slots in Halle, Saarbrücken, St. Gallen, Budapest, Vienna, Prague and in Luxembourg. He made his US debut with the world premiere of The Seduction of Sheila Valentine in Philadelphia. From 2004 to 2010, he was Head Conductor at the Opernfestspiele St. Margarethen, and from 2010 to 2017, Musical Director and Head Conductor at the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien, the leading theatre for musicals in the German-speaking world. There he conducted works such as The Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies and Jesus Christ Superstar. He was musical supervisor for Elisabeth in Germany and Seoul, and conducted the VBW’s guest performance of Elisabeth in Osaka and Tokyo in October 2012. On top of this, he orchestrated and conducted the world premiere of Wildhorn’s Artus – Excalibur: The Musical at Theater St. Gallen in the spring of 2014, as well as Don Camillo & Peppone in 2016.
