Born in Nuremberg in 1981, Patrick Lange is one of the promising talents to be found among the current young generation of conductors, and has already established a comprehensive opera and concert repertoire. He began his musical career in the boys' choir of the Regensburger Domspatzen. Upon the completion of his formal school education, he studied at the universities of music in Würzburg and Zurich, and in 2005 was inducted into the conductors' forum of the Deutscher Musikrat. In the same year, Claudio Abbado elected him assistant conductor of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. He gave concerts with the orchestra in Bolzano in 2008. As Abbado's assistant, he also worked with the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Orchestra Mozart Bologna, and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.
In 2007, Patrick Lange was awarded the European Culture Prize in the category of grants for young conductors. In 2009, he was the first recipient of the Eugen Jochum Scholarship of the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester.
He began his career as an opera conductor in Zurich (»L'Enfant et les Sortilèges«) and Lucerne (»Falstaff« and »Don Giovanni«). His successful debut at the Komische Oper Berlin came in 2007 with »The Marriage of Figaro«. He has been the Kapellmeister since 2008/09, and in May 2010 he was made the opera house's head conductor. He now supervises a broad repertoire.
In 2009, Patrick Lange toured with »Così fan tutte« and the Glyndebourne Opera in England.
In November 2010, he debuted at the Wiener Staatsoper with »Madame Butterfly« at the Wiener Staatsoper, followed by performances there of »Don Giovanni«, »Così fan tutte«, and »The Bat« and a guest performance of »Ariadne on Naxos« in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Patrick Lange has conducted concerts with the Hamburg, Bochum, and Düsseldorf symphony orchestras, the Beethoven-Orchester Bonn, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra in Venezuela, among others. In August 2010, he conducted the closing concert of the Bayreuth Festival of Young Artists. He has been commissioned to go on tour with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in October 2011.
During the 2011/12 season, he will be conducting performances of »Rusalka«, »Idomeneo«, »The Knight of the Rose«, »La Traviata«, »The Master Singers of Nuremberg«, four symphony concerts, and the New Year's concerts. Further concerts will take place with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester in Stuttgart and Vienna, as well with the philharmonic orchestras of Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and Graz.
Opera performances abroad will lead him to the Wiener Staatsoper with »Don Giovanni«, »Madame Butterfly«, and »The Magic Flute for Children«. In November 2011 he will make his debut at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, with »La Traviata«. In addition, performances of »The Abduction from the Seraglio« at the Bayerische Staatsoper, the Canadian Opera in Toronto, and the Zurich Opera have also been planned, with additional performances of »Jenufa« and »Werther« also scheduled at the latter location.
