Born in Oslo, the baritone studied singing at the Oslo Conservatory and the State Opera School from 1986 to 1991. In 1991, his first engagement led him to Düsseldorf. Tom Erik Lie was engaged in Gelsenkirchen from 1993 to 1998. In 1996, he was nominated by Opernwelt magazine as the »best new artist of the year« for his performance as Wolfram in »Tannhäuser«. In 1995, he received the Ingrid Bjoners Scholarship for young singers . This was followed by guest performances in places including Hanover, Essen, Nuremberg, Bonn, Leipzig, and Dresden. He was a member of the Leipzig Opera ensemble from 1998 to 2001. Here, he interpreted such roles as Frère Léon in the inaugural German performance of Messiaen's »Saint François d’Assise«, Guglielmo, Papageno, and Siegfried in Schumann's »Genoveva«, and Wolfram in »Tannhäuser« – a role which he also sang at the Copenhagen Royal Opera. He was then engaged at the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 2001 to 2004, where he performed as Papageno, Wolfram, Sharpless, Albert, Schaunard, and Frère Léon. His debut at the Komische Oper Berlin came in 2003, when he sang Edwin in »The Riviera Girl«. He has been a member of the ensemble since 2004 and has sung in roles such as Marcel in La Bohème, Count Almaviva in »The Marriage of Figaro«, Papageno, Gabriel von Eisenstein, Georges Germont, and the title roles in »Eugene Onegin« and »Don Giovanni«.
