The Polish mezzo-soprano studied in Poznań under Wojciech Maciejowski, as well as at the »Hanns Eisler« Academy of Music Berlin under Anneliese Fried. She was still a student when she was hired as a soloist by the Theater Dortmund. There her roles included Zerlina, Fenena in »Nabucco«, Cherubino, and Olga in »Eugene Onegin«. This was followed by an engagement at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, where she expanded her repertoire with the roles of Nicklausse in »The Tales of Hoffmann«, Ottavia in »The Coronation of Poppea«, Sextus in »La Clemenza di Tito«, and the title role in the inaugural German performance of Philippe Boesmans' »Julie«. Concert tours and guest performances led Karolina Gumos to perform at such venues as the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, the Semperoper Dresden, the Hamburgische Staatsoper, the Munich Opera Festival, the Handel Festival in Karlsruhe, the Seoul Opera, the RuhrTriennale, the Wratislavia Cantans in Wroclaw, and the Lutosławski Festival in Warsaw. She is a prize-winner of the international Ada-Sari singing competition and the Schloss Rheinsberg Chamber Opera competition. She has worked with conductors including Peter Schneider, Stefan Soltesz, Friedemann Layer, Reinhard Schwarz, Michael Hofstetter, Ion Marin, and Jörg-Peter Weigle, and such directors as Willy Decker, Hans Neuenfels, Christine Mielitz, Andreas Homoki, and Marco Arturo Marelli. Karolina Gumos has been a member of the Komische Oper Berlin ensemble since 2006; her roles here have included Octavian, Rosina, Dorabella, Giulietta in »The Tales of Hoffmann«, Idamantes in »Idomeneo« and the title role in »La Périchole«.
