The Dutch mezzo-soprano studied for a music-teaching qualification, as well as violin and singing, at the Academy of Music in Arnhem, and in 1987 was brought by Harry Kupfer to the Komische Oper Berlin, where she debuted as Olga in »Eugene Onegin« and sang as Leocasta in Handel's »Giustino«. Caren van Oijen was a guest performer at opera houses including the Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam under Pierre Boulez and Mstislaw Rostropowitsch and the Hamburgische Staatsoper under Simone Young, as well as at the opera houses of Düsseldorf, Cologne, Bonn, and Essen. She accepted invitations to the Salzburg Festival and the Halle Handel Festival, to the Leipzig Bach Festival, the Kissinger Summer, the Santander Festival, and the Holland Festival. As a concert performer, she has appeared with, amongst others, the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, the Dresden Philharmonie, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie in Bremen, the Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest, the Concertgebouw Orkest, the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, and the Schönberg Ensemble, and has contributed to numerous radio and CD recordings. At the Komische Oper Berlin, she has appeared as Mrs Sedley in »Peter Grimes«, Maddalena in »Rigoletto«, Clarice in »The Love for Three Oranges«, The Grandmother/Frau Rabe in »The Snow Queen«, Sonyetka in »Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District«, Marcellina in »The Marriage of Figaro«, and Olga in »Eugene Onegin«. Caren van Oijen has been a member of the Komische Oper Berlin ensemble since 2003.
