The tenor was born in Austria and received his education as a vocalist under Helena Łazarska at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. He was the winner of the international Dvořák competition in Karlsbad and the Musica Juventutis competition of the Wiener Konzerthaus. Guest engagements have led him to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden as Alfred in »The Bat«, to the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Theater an der Wien, the Volksoper Vienna, the theatres of Kiel, Dortmund, and Krefeld as Truffaldino in »The Love for Three Oranges«, the Salzburg Easter Festival (First Prisoner in Fidelio – available on CD from EMI Classics), the Wiener Festwochen, the RuhrTriennale, the Bergen International Festival (Pedrillo in Abduction from the Seraglio), and the Ostseefestspiele Stralsund (Tony in »West Side Story«), as well as the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. In the course of these engagements, he has worked with conductors such as Bertrand de Billy, Plácido Domingo, Marek Janowski, Marc Minkowski, Kirill Petrenko, and Simon Rattle. Thomas Ebenstein is also involved in spiritual vocal music, working with such conductors as Helmuth Rilling. He became a member of the Komische Oper Berlin ensemble in 2004, and his parts here have included Don Ottavio in »Don Giovanni«, Pedrillo in »Abduction from the Seraglio«, Basilio in »The Marriage of Figaro«, Valzacchi in »The Knight of the Rose«, Jakob Schmidt in »Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny«, Jaquino in »Fidelio (1805)«, the Duke of Kent in »Lear«, Borsa in »Rigoletto«, Alfred in »The Bat«, and Daniel in »Robin Hood«.
