Sebastian Baumgarten

Sebastian Baumgarten was born in East Berlin. From 2003 till 2005 he was Chief Director of the Meiningen Theatre. From 1999 to 2002 he was Chief Director at the Kassel Staatstheater. Since 1992 he realized own direction works in opera and drama, amongst others at the National Theatre Mannheim, the Royal Opera Kopenhagen and the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
After his direction studies at the Berlin University of Music »Hanns Eisler«, he took over direction assistencies amongst others with Ruth Berghaus, Einar Schleef and Robert Wilson. Sebastian Baumgarten staged for the first time at the Komische Oper Berlin Händel' s Opera »Orest«, in the 2005/06 season. For this interpretation he gets the title »Director of the year« in the annual selection of the Magazine Opernwelt (2006). 2008 Sebastian Baumgarten opened the season with a theatrical version of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts »Requiem«.
